Kiirtan in New York
"By kiirtan the mind becomes pure, and with this pure mind, one can do meditation. If the mind is made pure even for five minutes by kiirtan. then if you do meditation for only five minutes, your meditation will be very good; you will surely attain spiritual progress."
-Shrii Shrii
Anandamurti
About the Program
We are inviting you to a very
special and unique program. It is a rare opportunity to join with yogic monks
and nuns in New York City for Kiirtan followed by Meditation.
The program will start with a short introduction, Prabhata Samgiita & bhajans
(spiritual songs), Kiirtan (devotional singing, recitation of Samskrita mantras), Sadhana (silent meditation), followed by a spiritual discourse by a yogic monk
or a nun. Prasad (sweets, that has been offered to the Supreme or the Divine)
and a vegetarian meal will be served after the program. We are organizing this special program for
both those who already practice Kiirtan and meditation (Sadhana) or who would
like to learn. Kiirtan is ideal for preparing the mind for meditation. It may
be performed sitting or combined with the dance, Lalita marmika, that express
the spirit of surrender toward the Divine. It was invented by Parvatii, the
wife of Shiva. When meditating in a group the collective force of many minds
focused together creates a strong spiritual vibration that benefits the individual
and whole group. We will have as special guests dedicated yogic
monks and nuns from Ananda Marga who have years of experience in meditation.
Ananda Marga is a social
and spiritual organization founded in India in 1955 by Shrii Shrii Anandamurti
(1921-1990). The mission of Ananda Marga is to help individuals achieve complete
self-realization and build a social structure in which the physical, mental
and spiritual needs of all people can be fulfilled. Ananda Marga contributes
to the process of individual development by providing instruction in meditation
and other yoga practices on a non-commercial basis. The method of Ananda Marga
is based on Tantra. The root "Tan" means "to expand" and
"Tra" means "liberator". So Tantra is the spiritual science
that liberates the mind through expansion. The special system of Tantric practices
was introduced by Shiva more than 7,000 years ago. It includes techniques for
deep silent meditation as well as many other yougic practices to balance the
body and mind.
